Anansi Boys
Anansi Boys is only the second Neil Gaiman novel I’ve read; the first being American Gods, which I enjoyed but not nearly as much as Anansi Boys.
Anansi Boys centers on a man (nick)named Fat Charlie. After his father dies, Fat Charlie discovers that there is much more to his family. His father was a god and Fat Charlie has a brother he never knew. Fat Charlie’s life is turned completely upside down when his brother comes to visit.
While much of the book centers around the everyday supernatural as only Gaiman can tell it, ultimately I thought the book was about Fat Charlie’s relationship with his father. Though, I suppose my view is colored by the fact that I’ve got a pair of nearly fourteen month old boys around. Either way, that is the particular theme of the book that I really latched onto, and it’s probably why I misted up at the end of the book. I cannot think of another book that has ever done that to me before.
